The National Weather Service confirms nine tornadoes touched down in the St. Louis area last week.  The Friday May 31st storms damaged homes and left tens of thousands without power, but no serious injuries were reported.  The twisters ranged in intensity from an EF-0 to an EF-3.  The strongest tornadoes struck in St. Charles and north St. Louis counties, with another tornado striking the southern edge of the River Bend.

South Roxana took the brunt of the storm, with other damage reported in Roxana and Hartford.   An EF-3 tornado was confirmed, with top winds around 160 miles per hour.  It was an EF-2 twister that hit Gillespie and caused about $2-million in damage to the high school, and also damaged a number of homes in the town.  It's believed strong winds caused the majority of the damage in the Edwardsville area last week.  In St. Charles County, 50 homes were destroyed and there was major damage done to about 300 homes thanks to the tornado that followed a path for about 32 miles.
