A new Alton Post Office is set to open on Tuesday along the Homer Adams Parkway. The downtown Alton Post Office on Belle Street will close after the end of the business day on Friday, but today is the last day those with post office boxes can retrieve their mail from the downtown location.
The new Alton Post Office will be housed at the former Piasa Lincoln Mercury building and will be open for business first thing Tuesday morning. The downtown location is closing after building owner, Ameren Illinois, opted not to renew the lease to the U.S. Postal Service which expires on May 31. Ameren plans to tear down the building and remediate the property of leftover contamination from a former manufacturing plant at the site dating back to before the post office was built. Those needing to conduct post office business in Alton on Saturday can use the locations in Upper Alton on Main Street or at the lower level of Alton Square Mall.
