About 20 years has passed since the Wayside Subdivision was bought out by the St. Louis Regional Airport and the residents of that Bethalto neighborhood were relocated. There is now word that a developer has signed a 4-year sublease with the airport to redevelop the land into what is being referred to at this point as the "Bethalto Landing Shopping Center."

GJ Grewe is the developer, which has also built the Wood River Applebees strip mall, and Alton Corners. Airport manager David Miller says there are plenty of ideas about what types of businesses would be a good fit for the area, but no confirmations at this point.

Miller comments

Wayside Estates was located across Illinois 111 from the airport, behind the Walgreen's store at the intersection with Illinois Route 140. It is also bordered by Illinois 255, which was not there when it was a residential community.
