If you have ever missed a phone call and called that number back just to see who it was, you are the mark that scammers are looking for in a new scheme. It’s called the “one-ring” scam, because the phone rings once, and when you dial back, you are subjecting yourself to extremely high fees, according to the Better Business Bureau.
BBB Investigator Bill Smith says if a victim tries to return the call, they are charged a $19.95 international call fee plus $9 a minute for the duration of the call.

Smith says if you get tricked into returning one of these calls, you should call your service provider immediately and tell them what happened. Most of these calls are from Caribbean nations including Grenada, Antigua, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica or the British Virgin Islands. Area codes for the calls include 268, 274, 473, 809 and 876. However, some calls may be domestic.
