Changes could be coming to the way Illinois public schools teach physical education. A task force has worked up a 148-page report on “Enhanced PE.” Illinois State Board of Education spokeswoman Mary Fergus says kids who are fit physically will be fit mentally, too. That does not jibe, she says, with today's experience.

“We know that in a typical 30-minute gym class for elementary students,” Fergus says, “they’re only really engaged in about 11 minutes of physical activity.” The proposed standards, reflecting both neuroscience research and the priority that people will be physically active their whole lives, must go before the state board.
