If you get a tax return check from the state, you’ll also receive some information on what your tax dollars paid for. Included in that envelope will be an insert breaking down state spending in the last fiscal year.  Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka (pictured) says that by showing how much was spent where, taxpayers can become better informed about where they feel the state can make cuts.

“They can even turn it into a game of ‘How would I balance the state budget?’ and share that with their legislators,” Topinka said. “Who knows, maybe we’ll make a game version it next year, kind of like state budget Monopoly.”
