The Bethalto School Board has OK’d plans for a $3.2-million, 10,000 square foot addition to Civic Memorial High School. The new structure, which will extend east from the current gymnasium, will contain a competition gym floor, new weight training facility, locker rooms, bathrooms and seating for up to 600 people. District officials awarded the project to Bruce Unterbrink Construction.
CMHS Athletic Director Steve Carey says this decision will improve the athletics program at the high school.
CMHS Principal Debra Pitts says that this will bring more people to CMHS.
CMHS Physical Education Department Chair Ty Laux said the decision will likely mean an expanded P.E. curriculum that could include CPR and Zumba classes. The majority of the funding for the project will be covered by state and federal grants. Construction is set to begin by mid-September.
