After the inauguration, Illinois’ new governor and first lady greeted well-wishers at one of the state’s historic sites. Gov. Bruce Rauner and his wife, Diana, appeared at the Old State Capitol, where a line for metal detectors kept people outside for a while. “I’m actually a Democrat,” said Monticello lawyer David Cox, “but I’m open-minded in terms of (Rauner) is our sitting governor now, and I’m open-minded to support him in whatever policies I can for the benefit of the people of Illinois.”

Cox brought his son, an Indiana University graduate student, to see the transfer of power and wish the new governor well. The Old State Capitol reception was an opportunity for members of the general public to meet the Rauners without having to purchase a ticket.
