Preliminary work is scheduled to begin this week on the land behind Alton High School that officials hope will one day be home to new athletic fields for students. In May, the Alton School Board approved a $2.5-million project for the nearly 30-acre plot of land to bring more high schools sports games and practices to the campus.
Alton School District Building and Grounds Director Dave McClintock says the plan now is to start clearing some of that property so design work can begin:

The initial phase calls for upgrading the current soccer practice field to a game field with a surrounding 8-lane track, the construction of a varsity baseball facility, two multi-purpose fields that will be used for physical education, soccer, football, and Marching 100 practices, a cross-country course, and a new restroom and concession facility.
