A couple of Champaign-area lawmakers say the General Assembly and governor went too far in trying to fix the Medicaid system. State Sen. Mike Frerichs (D-Champaign) and State Rep. Naomi Jakobsson (D-Urbana) say a “Seniors Pharmaceutical Assistance Relief Program” they are proposing will fill part of the gap created by the cancellation of Illinois Cares Rx.

“It’s very easy to say, ‘We need to cut them out,’ but it’s a little more difficult to see how those people who choose not to take their prescription drugs – what that’s going to cost the state” when poor people go to the emergency room instead, Frerichs says. He says the prescription drug program cut is an example of “penny wise, pound foolish” thinking.   Jakobsson says she hopes other cuts have freed up enough money to pay for this new program, which she says is smaller than the one which was axed.
