The City of Alton's next fire chief will be Captain Bernie Sebold. The veteran of the Alton Fire Department was named to take over the job upon the retirement of Greg Bock, which is effective this Sunday. Sebold is 38 years old and one of the youngest men to serve as chief. He has been a member of the Alton Fire Department for almost 17 years.
Sebold says he'll be stepping into a good position with a good crew:
Sebold joined the force in 1995, after serving two years as a volunteer fire fighter in Godfrey while he attended Lewis and Clark Community College. He'll be finishing a masters in business administration soon through Missouri Baptist University. Sebold was promoted to Captain in 2005, and served as deputy chief from April 2008 to May 2009 before requesting to return to the ranks where he has served until his appointment. He will earn just over $91,000 per year.
