The NAACP branch in Alton will have its annual "Back to School Stay in School" program this Saturday. The event will take place beginning at 10am at James Killion Park at Salu in Alton. Organizers expect to once again give school supplies and lunch to over 1,000 students with an hundreds of parents expected to take part.
The NAACP works in conjunction with the Alton School District. School officials say it's very important to the kids to be prepared. That means they need to come to school with the proper materials and supplies to do their work. NAACP President James Gray says he didn't have that opportunity when he was a child.
The Alton branch of the NAACP invites all Alton students to attend this year's event. There will be transportation to and from the event for free. Parents may call 474-2600 for a list of the pick-up and drop-off points for students. Parents must bring their children with them to this event to receive the supplies.
