West Side Story is set in New York City where two rival gangs - the Sharks and the Jets - battle for supremacy of the streets. Unbeknownst to them, a former Jet and younger sister of the Sharks' leader fall in love at a school dance. It is a modern-day Romeo and Juliet story, and it comes alive this weekend on the stage at the Nazarene Community Center in Roxana, also known as the "Old Roxana Theater."
The show is a fundraiser for the Alton Area Animal Aid Association. Director Sue Mueller has been donating her services to helping the 5A's for about a year, and hopes this show will help them meet their financial needs. She says the cast has been fun to work with, and there's a good chemistry.
This is the 55 year anniversary of both the 5A's and West Side Story. Advance tckets are $10 for adults and $6 for students. Ad on $2 if you buy your tickets at the door. Performances are at 7:30pm Friday and Saturday, with a 2pm matinee on Sunday.
