One of the three men to be charged in the December 2011 murder of 23-year-old Tyler Hoppe of Alton has been sentenced. 21-year-old Nigel Generally of Berkley, Missouri, was sentenced to 33 years in prison in Madison County Circuit Court on Thursday. Generally pleaded guilty to a single count of murder earlier this year and has been ordered to serve 100-percent of his sentence.
Investigators say Generally (pictured) and 22-year-old Larry Belk of St. Louis shot Hoppe during an attempted robbery. Belk fled the area shortly after the shooting while Generally was caught almost immediately. Belk was eventually caught, and a third man, 22-year-old Hosie L. Burgess of the 2,600 block of Sanford Avenue in Alton was also charged with first degree murder. Police believe Generally and Belk were actually at the murder scene, while Burgess provided the gun and ammunition that killed Hoppe. The Belk and Burgess trials are pending.
