Heroin use continues to take lives in the region, and Madison County is already over two-dozen overdose deaths for the year. In 2009, Madison County reported 9 heroin deaths, in 2010 the number doubled. In 2011 there were 26. As of Thursday, there have been 28 confirmed heroin-related deaths for 2015, with more investigations pending.
When prescription overdoses and other drugs are factored in, there have been 42 overdose deaths in Madison County this year. Madison County Coroner Steve Nonn tells The Big Z this is an epidemic that affects everyone.
