An Alton street may soon be restricted to one-way traffic due to dumping issues. In July, the Alton City Council closed Market Street between 6th and 8th Streets in an effort to curb the problem. Now under consideration is the portion of Market between 8th and 9th Street, which continues to attract people dumping their unwanted items.
Alderwoman Carolyn MacAfee, who also chairs the Alton Beautification and Clean City Committee, says this is strictly about the trash.

Aldermen laid over the resolution so more study of the issue could take place. One suggestion was to make 8th Street one way as well to further discourage outsiders from coming to the area to dump. The Committee of the Whole also placed on file a resolution that would require all restaurants and bars in the Downtown area to install and maintain cigarette diffusers at every public entrance or exit.
