Taxpayers will no longer have to wade through lengthy paper statements to find out how their congressman spends taxpayer dollars.
The Sunlight Foundation said it’s great news that the U.S. House of Representatives has decided to release spreadsheet-ready electronic quarterly spending statements. U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis, a Republican from Central Illinois, said he chaired a bipartisan review of House spending policies, and the conclusion was to make the information more accessible.
“The information is already out there, but it wasn’t available in a searchable document. So we are now going to post it in a searchable manner so that anybody, any taxpayer, can go in and find out how our taxpayer dollars are spent,” Davis said.

Davis said the spending covered includes House leadership offices, committees, salaries and allowances.
“You always err on the side of transparency, and that’s what we’ve done here,” Davis said.
Davis said it’s now time for the U.S. Senate and the president to follow suit.
“The fact of the matter is this makes the House of Representatives probably the most transparent organization in Washington, D.C.,” Davis said.
