A new Multimodal Transportation Facility in Alton is expected to be in service in a couple of years, and tourism officials are already thinking of ways to bring in more visitors. A report showing ridership increasing for the recently completed fiscal year is good news for those in the industry. The facility is being targeted as a destination for some of the 675,000 riders on the Lincoln Service trains between Chicago and St. Louis.
Alton Regional Convention and Visitor's Bureau President Brett Stawar says increased connectivity is a key to getting more tourism dollars flowing though the area. He says they hope to get more people in from Chicago
A $13.85-million TIGER Grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation was awarded about a year ago, and is being shared with Madison County Transit, which will provide the bus service that will service the train station. While the state has not declared the former Wadlow Golf Course to be its choice for the site of the new facility, a decision should be coming soon.
