With home ownership apparently pointing toward improving the Mexico neighborhood, Alton officials are making plans to bring another 30 homes to the Hampton Place development. About a decade ago the first residents moved into the 50 home development, and most are still there today.
After a tenant lives there for 15 years, that person builds enough equity to buy the house. Alton Mayor Tom Hoechst says he is very pleased with how the plan has worked so far.
To make way for 30 more units, some vacant lots will be used, and some unimproved streets will be vacated. A public meeting on this topic will be scheduled for March 14 at City Hall. Hoechst also announced at last night's meeting the signing of an agreement with the Police Lieutenants union. The only union that is still without a contract is the police patrolmen, as talks continue.
