Sampling groundwater for hydrocarbons is part of an ongoing effort in Roxana, as the former owners of the Wood River Refinery get ready to install more groundwater monitoring wells. Starting Monday, contractors will be placing new units in the area near the Wood River Refinery, bringing the total number of wells in the area to about three dozen.
Shell Oil Company spokesperson Kimberly Windon says the monitoring program will go on for an undetermined length of time.
During the installation of the wells, a small portion of East 4th Street will see a lane closure for a couple of days. A lawsuit was filed earlier this year against Shell Oil Company and others over the need for medical monitoring due to possible problems that could occur in connection with alleged groundwater contamination.
