A bumper crop of bugs is on the way this summer, according to those who work with them on a regular basis. Gardeners, farmers and landscapers are all reporting a variety of insects are already coming out of the woodwork this spring, as a lengthy hard freeze did not materialize.
Still, Mark Smith, owner of Kansny Productions in Greenfield, says he is not ready to assume we've seen the last of the cold weather.
Last week's cold snap did damage to many of the flowering plants, but did little to kill off what appears to be an onslaught of mosquitoes, ticks, and spiders this year. As for insects that can harm your plants, spider mites are already proving to be bothersome, according to Smith.
