Authorities in O’Fallon, Illinois, believe a veteran’s monument that was damaged earlier this month was most likely the victim of the weather.  Police have looked at the scene, and at nearby surveillance video, and found no evidence of anyone who knocked over two large granite slabs.

The two pieces were broken into dozens of pieces and will be replaced.  Police initially put out a call for help in finding the person responsible, but they say with strong storms that moved through the night before the damage was discovered, the weather was most likely the cause of the downed monuments.  Officials in the city did say thanks to media coverage of the damage, more than $15,000 has been raised to cover the cost of the replacement pieces that should be in place by Veteran’s Day.
