A group of minority contractors is suing IDOT. The Metro East Black Contractors Organization, or MEBCO, claims minority workers are being shut out of the Mississippi River Bridge project. They're suing the department for 650-million dollars. IDOT officials say 23-percent of workers on the project are minorities, more than required by law.

But MEBCO disputes that figure, claiming the number is closer to 15-percent. The two sides have been meeting over the past several months, and the contractors attorney says strides have been with the state but it is not moving fast enough. They hope the suit will prompt action to not only hire more minorities for the bridge project, but also other construction projects in the region.
