Today is National Minority Donor Awareness Day. Secretary of State Jesse White says more than half of the five-thousand people waiting for an organ in Illinois are minorities. Yet, they account for very few of the people who actually donate. White says most people don’t become donors because they believe the myths surrounding organ donation, for example they think doctors won’t work hard enough to save them if they fall ill. White says that’s totally false and urges minorities to sign up to save a life.
Five-thousand people are on the waiting list to receive an organ in Illinois, most of them need a new kidney. African Americans make up about 27-percent of the list, followed by Hispanics, Asians, Native Americans, and Pacific Islanders.
