A minor earthquake rattled parts of southern Illinois and southeast Missouri earlier this morning. The U.S. Geological Survey reports the magnitude 4.0 quake was centered about 9 miles east, southeast of Sikeston, Missouri at 3:58am today. There are no reports of injuries or serious damage coming out of that region.
The quake was reportedly felt in some parts of the St. Louis area this morning. The epicenter is in the New Madrid Fault Zone that runs through the Missouri Bootheel and into southern Illinois, western Kentucky and Tennessee and northeastern Arkansas.
