Bruce Rauner, a Republican candidate for governor, says he’ll take on the government union bosses. What do the union bosses think? One of them is Henry Bayer (pictured), head of AFSCME Council 31, which represents the bulk of the state payroll: “We’re in the mess that we’re in No. 1, largely because of the collapse of the economy in 2008. That collapse was caused not by teachers and firefighters and nurses and professors, but by the Bruce Rauners of the world who undermined our financial system that brought us to the brink of depression,” he said.

Rauner is a hedge fund manager who might put $30 million of his own money into his campaign. He complains that public pensions are exorbitant, making the workers millionaires when they retire. Bayer says the average state worker’s pension is $23,000 a year, with no Social Security.
