The process of putting together legislation about guns continues in Springfield. A House committee Thursday heard different agencies and organizations talk about Illinois’ mental health community and whether concealed carry can work with these groups of people. Dr. Debra Ferguson of the Illinois Department of Human Services thinks so.

“It’s the history of violence that is the most weighted factor that clinicians and mental health policy people wouldwant to know about before making such a determination,” Ferguson said. Problems within the mental health community were discussed, such as only 27 of the 102 counties reporting mental health reports to the Illinois State Police. Many felt the existing laws must be reinforced to better handle new ones.
