People with mental illness, their care providers and advocates gathered at the Thompson Center in Chicago Wednesday where they called on lawmakers to stop cutting mental health services. Mark Heyrman of Mental Health America of Illinois says lawmakers must enact a Medicaid expansion bill that would expand state services to those who need them.

“Yet again, despite previous cuts, the state is refusing to fund all of the services we need,” Heyrman said. A.J. French, a resident of Madison County who has a mental illness, says the state shouldn’t turn its back on those who need help because recovery is possible. “I believe and I know and I’m living proof that recovery is a reality,” French said.
