Menard Prison is one of the worst lockups in the state and things don't seem to be getting better. That's according to The John Howard Association, a prison watchdog group that says inmate overcrowding is cause for serious concern. The prison is currently housing 500 more inmates than it's designed to hold.
Three inmates have been killed by their own cellmates since January 31st and several guards have been attacked this year. The group's executive director says the state's prison system is extremely stressed and warns the problems will persist until some type of reform's in place.
