This week’s meeting of the Illinois State Board of Education was the first with the Rev. James Meeks at the gavel. A pastor by trade, Meeks says his experience chairing the Senate Education Committee for five years makes him an appropriate choice as chairman of ISBE. Meeks, who campaigned against same-sex marriage while a state senator, says those who identify as LGBT should not fret over fairness.

“If you’re in the school system, and the reason for school systems is (so) their kids can be properly educated, then you can have all the assurance in the world that James Meeks is going to work hard for your kid to receive a proper education, for your kid’s school to be funded, (and) for your kid’s teacher to be of high quality,” he said. Meeks, a gubernatorial nominee, is subject to Senate confirmation.
