The different deadlines for health insurance signups can be confusing. For insurance from the exchange under the Affordable Care Act, it’s Dec. 15. For Medicare open enrollment, for those who want to change their coverage, it’s Dec. 7. Frank Mancuso, head of the United Health Care Medicare plans in Illinois, says Medicare beneficiaries should stay away from the Get Covered Illinois website, which is for private insurance for those not eligible for Medicare.

For Medicare beneficiaries, “they can go to Medicare.gov, and Medicare.gov will list all the insurance plans that are applicable to them based on their age and the fact that they are Medicare-eligible,” he said. Mancuso says there is confusion between the two – Medicare and the Affordable Care Act exchanges – especially for people who are new to Medicare, but he says once they’ve been enrolled for a few years they get the hang of it.
