Bicyclists that have been used to dodging the obstacles on the Great River Road Bikeway have been treated to a nice surprise in recent weeks. Madison County Transit, the Illinois Department of Transportation, and the City of Alton have teamed up to spruce up a segment of the bikeway in Alton prior to the arrival of fall foliage.
Although MCT does not own or maintain this bikeway, it will be mowing, trimming, pruning, removing rocks and making other repairs to a 5.5-mile segment of the trail from Piasa Park north to Piasa Creek. MCT Managing Director Jerry Kane says when they started, parts of the trail were impassable.
He says IDOT has many other critical responsibilities and that this is an area where MCT can offer both experienced trail staff and expertise on trail maintenance.
