Weather permitting, the Illinois Department of Transportation will start on a $5.4 million project today to repair the pavement and resurface Illinois Route 140 from Annex Street near the Wadlow Statue in Upper Alton all the way to Williams Street in Bethalto, near the Illinois 255 interchange. It is a 4.2 mile stretch of highly-traveled road that has seen its share of patching in the past, but will now get a complete makeover.
One of the areas that will see the most change is the Cottage Hills area, where the islands will be modified, according to IDOT Field Engineer Joe Gasaway.
There will be periodic lane closures throughout the project, according to Gasaway. Initially, closures will only be during daytime hours, but as the complete resurfacing commences, motorists can expect some nighttime closures as well. Work is expected to wrap up around November 30.
