A federal court has issued a sentence in a Meth case out of Madison County 43-year-old Billy Joe Merchant of Granite City entered a guilty plea in U.S. District Court last May for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and was sentenced on Thursday to 70 months in federal prison.
Merchant admitted to authorities that at the time of his arrest in February, he possessed approximately 30 grams of unusually pure crystal “ICE” methamphetamine at his Granite City mobile home. Authorities also say Merchant also admitted that he had intended to sell the Meth which he possessed. ICE often sells for as much as $100 per gram. Following the completion of his sentence, he will serve three years supervised release. The investigation was led by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Metropolitan Enforcement Group of Southwestern Illinois and the Granite City Police Department.
