A man who was accused of providing cocaine to a business owner in Jersey County has been sentenced to federal prison. 56-year-old Charles Sweeny of St. Charles, Missouri, was sentenced to nearly five years in prison following a guilty plea last year in U.S. District Court in East St. Louis.
Sweeny worked as a construction worker for 55-year-old David Ray of Fieldon who owned several construction businesses, and authorities learned in early 2012 that Sweeny was supplying Ray with cocaine. Undercover agents made two controlled purchases from Sweeny and arrested him in April 2012. Authorities then built a case against Ray, who was later charged with unlawfully possessing firearms while using cocaine, and his businesses were investigated for failure to pay more than $1.2 million in taxes to the IRS. Ray was charged, convicted and sentenced last year to more than three years in prison and ordered to pay back the money owed.
