A Pocahontas man could spend up to six years in prison after he fired a gun into a bar, and a bullet struck a woman in the head. 56-year-old Darrell Buettner was convicted of aggravated discharge of a firearm from the February 2011 incident at the Luna Cafe in Granite City, but will get a day off his sentence for each good day behind bars.
Buettner claimed he was innocent and was set up by others who were at the scene, and was forced into a confession by police. Circuit Judge Kyle Napp opted for the prison term although his attorney had asked for probation. Buettner will also receive alcohol treatment while in prison. The woman who was struck by the bullet in the face was singing karaoke at the time, and continues to recover. She is suing Buettner and the business. Buettner has previous convictions of aggravated assault, marijuana possession, DUI and disorderly conduct.
