An Alton man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a woman in his home last year. 24 year old Everett t. Shelby of the 1000 block of Oakwood Avenue will have to serve at least 85-percent of his sentence according to state law. Authorities say Shelby violently attacked his victim after she refused to go with him after leaving a bar in December.
Shelby was identified by the victim shortly after the attack, and was familiar with him prior to the attack. The woman told police she was heading back to the home of a relative when Shelby approached her on the parking lot of the business and told her to come with him. When she refused, prosecutors alleged Shelby dragged her into his nearby home and beat her, then sexually assaulted her. She was able to escape to her relatives home and she went to the hospital where authorities were notified. Shelby pled guilty to a count of aggravated criminal sexual assault.
