An Alton man was found guilty by a Madison County jury on Monday of the sexual assault of two young children. 30 year old Michael Burgund, formerly of the 4200 block of Aberdeen, originally turned himself into police in April of 2011, and admitted to the crimes. In court, Burgund denied any responsibility in the case, but a videotaped confession was shown during the proceedings which apparently helped convince the jury.
Jurors met for about six hours on Monday before reaching a verdict last evening. Burgund was found guilty of six counts of Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault against two female family members, ages 2 and 3, beginning in June 2008. The maximum sentence for the Class X felony is 6-30 years, but sentencing will be held early next year following a review by the Madison County Probation Department. Burgund remains held in the Madison County Jail.
