A Granite City man is dead after he fell through the ice while trying to retrieve a drone.  54-year-old Mark A. Miller was pulled from the water after 2am Sunday, hours after he fell through the ice near the low water dam on Chouteau Island in Madison Saturday afternoon,

The Madison County Coroner’s Office reports Miller and his 11-year-old son were flying drones near a pond on Chouteau Island on Saturday when one of the drones crashed onto the ice.  Miller told his son to wait in the car while he retrieved the drone.  Authorities believe when Miller walked onto the ice, he fell through.  The son, who did not see the incident, waited in the car for three hours until it ran out of gas.  He then began walking to find help along West Chain of Rocks Road.  A passing motorist saw the boy and picked him up, taking him to a Madison County Sheriff’s Office substation in Mitchell around 9pm Saturday.   Police called for help from the Mitchell and Long Lake Fire Departments.  A St. Louis County Police Helicopter assisted the search by providing a spotlight.  The boy is now staying with his mother, who lives out of town.  Funeral arrangements for Miller are pending.
