An Alton man has been acquitted on a burglary charge after a Madison County jury could not find enough evidence to convict him. 23 year old Lee Wilson Gilliam was charged with breaking into a home of a former girlfriend in October 2010, but while he was acquitted, he remains jailed on other pending charges.
Prosecutors alleged Gilliam was spotted leaving the home in the 2600 block of Main Street by the woman who lived there, but Gilliam told her he was just trying to check on her. She testified that items inside her home were moved around, but nothing was missing and she contacted police. Alton Police reported tire marks in the rear yard and a back door had been pried open. The jury ruled it could not find enough evidence to convict Gilliam. He is, however, still in custody, pending the outcome of charges filed against him for aggravated battery in connection with an incident at the Madison County Jail.
