Ground has been broken for a major tourism and sports complex in Belleville. The multi-million dollar development by the Keller family of Effingham will include a brew house, restaurants, gas station, convention center, hotels, and multiple sports fields across from the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows.
Three years in the making, the planned development could bring $500,000 annually to the city in sales taxes, and could attract thousands of visitors each year for events and tournaments. The brew house is called Hofbrauhaus, and other restaurants are expected. There’s no word yet on the hotel chains that will build at the site, but in a deal with the landowners, the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, the Kellers have already taken over operation of the restaurant at the Shrine and eventually the hotel at the Shrine will close. The sports complex is a separate development at the site that will include up to 11 fields for soccer…most on artificial turf…as well as facilities for sand volleyball, rugby and lacrosse. A Kansas City based company is working on the sports side, and moved its development to Illinois after plans fell through in Chesterfield, Missouri. The entire project could bring 500 jobs to the area, with the sports fields potentially opening in the fall of 2016.
