The annual Elijah P. Lovejoy Week begins today in Alton. Lovejoy has been referred to by some as the first casualty of the Civil War, having been killed on the banks of the Mississippi River in Alton. On three occasions, pro-slavery factions who wanted to stop him from publishing abolitionist views destroyed his printing press.
Trustee Ed Gray says the Lovejoy Week celebrations begin with the Vesper Service this afternoon at 4pm at the College Avenue Presbyterian Church. Part of the solemn service will be a performance by the Alton High School musical group “Celebrations.”
