The Elijah P. Lovejoy memorial week continues today at Alton's College Avenue Presbyterian Church. The Lovejoy celebration includes several events around the city to remember abolitionist and free press martyr who was shot by a pro slavery mob in November 1837 guarding his newspaper press.
Trustee with the foundation Ed Gray says tonight's Lovejoy Vesper Service begins at 5pm.
The week continues on Tuesday with Lovejoy Day at the Alton City Cemetery. At noon, participants and the public will gather at the Lovejoy Statue for a brief ceremony, hilighted by a musical performance by a vocal trio, and remarks by Dr. Kenneth Spells, the new Superintendent of the Alton School District.
