The Elijah P. Lovejoy Memorial week wraps up with two events today. The commemoration began with the annual Vesper Service last Sunday and the music festival on Thursday. Yesterday was the group's annual meeting, and today at noon will be the public ceremony at the Alton City Cemetery.

Today's ceremony is open to the public. Elijah Lovejoy was a martyr of the freedom of the press and abolitionist movement and was killed at the age of 34 by a pro-slavery mob on November 7, 1837. Lovejoy and some of his supporters were attempting to project a printing press when he was shot and killed as the mob was attempting to burn down the building. The Lovejoy Monument was errected in 1897.
