A man who is accused of trying to solicit children for sex remains in the Madison County Jail. 40-year-old James Lopes is representing himself in court, and appeared yesterday before Associate Judge Neil Schroeder who turned down many of his requests.
Lopes was arrested and charges in late April with disorderly conduct and trespassing along with three counts of felony grooming…alleging that he approached children or their parents to solicit them for sex. He handed out cards containing a website on which he promotes what he calls his teachings about sex between children and adults. He asked the judge for a change of venue due to news coverage of his case, and also asked for a private investigator to interview potential witnesses. Lopes has been ordered to undergo mental fitness evaluations in court, but has so far refused representation by a public defender. There is also a civil case against him to find him declared a sexually dangerous person, which could result in him being held indefinitely by the state. Authorities believe Lopes was homeless at the time of his arrest.
