On the final day of the fiscal year, Illinois lawmakers passed a budget for the new year that both sides say will ensure the lights for state government remain on.  The bill approved by the House and Senate increases state aid to public schools for the entire school year. The measure also has hundreds of millions of dollars for higher education.

State Representative Dan Beiser (D-Alton) tells The Big Z their work is not done, and some hard questions will have to be answered when the General Assembly meets in November for the Veto Session.

State Representative Dwight Kay (R-Glen Carbon) says he's not completely happy with this bill.

The measure also includes funding for various human services and averts 25,000 layoffs by paying for construction projects.
