State Senator Bill Haine and State Representative Dan Beiser, both Alton Democrats, are sponsoring amendments to the state constitution that would only allow marriage between a man and a woman. Illinois already allows same sex couples to enter into a civil union, but some say that’s not enough, and is still discriminatory.
Haine (pictured) says that is a fundamental change to what he considers traditional marriage:
Illinois could become the 10th state in the nation to allow same sex couples to marry. The joint resloutions would have to pass in both the House and Senate before being placed on the ballot in the next general election. At that point, the amendment would have to be approved by 60%of voters to become law.
