Three Illinois communities, including two in this area, have been awarded grant money by Landmarks Illinois. The Miner's Institute Foundation in Collinsville will use their $1000 grant to purchase a new boiler for the Miner's Institute building on West Main Street. The First Baptist Church in Jerseyville will put their $500 grant toward the restoration of the Church's clock.
Landmarks Illinois President Bonnie McDonald says the clock tower and bell, which sit on the 1916 church building, are familiar fixtures in this small town. Recently, the rope holding one side of the weights, which keep the clock ticking, frayed and broke, dropping the weights to the floor.
The Church has begun a capital campaign to raise the needed money to restore the clock and bell to chime again on the hour and, once again, be heard throughout the community. McDonald says these grants are not meant to cover the full cost of the projects, but to help as the local organizations raise money for their completion. The Village of Farmersville will use their $1000 grant to replace long-missing windows in the Opera House building.
