A general addressed the troops at the American Legion state convention in Springfield: Attorney General Lisa Madigan.  She brought her tried-and-true themes about identity theft and credit card safety, along with for-profit colleges – which, she said, prey upon vets.  They “specifically target members of the military because of the fact that they have good GI Bill benefits,” she said.  But the tuition can be costly and the benefits meager.

In addition to these colleges sometimes being unaccredited, the rap is that their placement is terrible and that many of their students are in financial distress.  “Of the former students who are in default on their student loans, 47 percent of them went to a for-profit institution,” she said.
