The state could soon be asked to maintain the cemetery hosting Abraham Lincoln’s resting place. Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield hosts Lincoln’s tomb, which draws hundreds of thousands of tourists a year as they seek to rub the nose of a Lincoln statue for good luck. Mark Mahoney, Springfield’s public works director, says that comes at a cost as cemetery roads are torn up and can’t be fixed. He says the state already maintains the tomb itself, and might be asked to take over the rest of the cemetery.
“We could have a discussion with them as far as assistance, is there any way we could come up with some type of assistance for our operations because the use of the state historic sites is such a burden on the cemetery,” Mahoney said.
Mahoney says the city could also have to levy a tax to make up for lost revenue in the face of declining burials and increasing costs.
